I’m a sucker for puzzles. The problem with most puzzle games is that they usually focus on one kind of puzzle and I lose interest. (Yeah, Brain Age. I’m looking at you. I enjoy Sudoku, but solving 85 jabillion Sudoku puzzles gets old fast.)

Professor Layton, luckily, does not suffer from this problem. Some of the puzzle themes are repeated, but there’s never more than four or five puzzles for each theme. For example, one of the themes is "Matchstick Puzzles", and there are half a dozen or so total matchstick related puzzles in the game. This variety really helps, as there will surely be some puzzle types that people like less than others. (For me, my bane is magic squares. Luckily, there are only a couple in the game.)

Professor Layton does a good job of wrapping the puzzle solving into an actual story. Where the developers could have easily thrown something simple around the puzzles, the story is actually quite entertaining. I was very near the end of the game before I figured out the village’s secret.

The game went quickly for me, taking about eleven and a half hours to finish. I intend to let it sit for a while and replay it to try to use as few hints as I can. I also need to make sure I have plenty of free time, because this game is very hard to put down.

Not only are there well over 100 puzzles in the game to solve, there are additional puzzles available weekly for download via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

I’ve never really been a devoted Simpsons fan. I’ll watch it when it’s on, but I don’t go out of my way to see it. One of my fears was that the Simpsons movie would be full of in-jokes, but I was happily surprised. Where most movies made from cartoons have failed, the Simpsons Movie has enough plot for a movie, instead of feeling like an episode that’s gone on way too long.

Without giving too much away, the scene where the churchgoers and bar patrons switch buildings with each other is probably my favorite – and I’m going to be using the EPA chief’s "mad with power" line at work soon.

I wanted to like this movie. Really, I did.

I wanted to like this movie. Really, I did. I’ve been a huge fan of South Park for years, but I should have known better. The only movie that Matt and Trey made that I’ve liked was the South Park movie.

Sure, there’s a lot of obscene language. Sure, there’s puppet sex. And lots of jabs at actors, terrorists, the US, etc. etc. etc. None of it is particularly funny. South Park thrives on its biting satire and social commentary – Team America has overblown theme songs and explosions instead.

I didn’t totally dislike the movie – it has its moments. Kim Jong Il is probably the best character in the movie, and I love his song about being "ronery". Still, I’m glad I didn’t see it in the theater, and I almost want my $2.99 rental fee back.

Thanks to iTunes movie rentals, I’m finally getting around to watching some of the movies I’ve missed in the last few years. It’s not that I’m living under a rock – I just refuse to go to a store and rent movies. Every time I’ve been to Blockbuster in the last five years has just been an annoying experience. I don’t watch enough movies to justify having a Netflix account.

I already watch almost every movie I buy on my iPhone, (thanks to Handbrake) so downloading movies is a logical nest step for me. And, in an effort to keep posts coming on a semi-regular basis, I thought I might as well start putting up some reviews of the movies I rent.

Movie reviews, coming soon. Because the Internet needs yet another uneducated moron reviewing things.
